The Critical Role of Containments in Restoration

Quick answer

A containment is a temporary sealed barrier that isolates a restoration work area from the rest of the property. It keeps contaminants such as mold spores, sewage-related contaminants, or asbestos and lead particles from spreading, and helps drying equipment work better. At New Life Restoration, containments are kept under negative air pressure with professional air scrubbers so air flows into the work area, not out of it.

What Is a Containment?

Containment barriers are one of the most important tools in restoration, and one of the most overlooked by people outside the industry. A containment is a temporary sealed barrier built to isolate a work area. Its purpose is simple: protect the home and the people in it from the hazards inside the workspace.

Why Containments Are Used

Lead and asbestos abatement

Containments keep dangerous particles from spreading into clean areas of the home.

Mold remediation

They keep the affected area isolated so spores don't migrate.

Sewage losses

They help prevent contaminants carried in evaporated air from moving through the rest of the structure.

Structural drying

They reduce the volume of air in the space being dried, which makes drying equipment more effective.

A Practical Barrier for Daily Life

Beyond contamination control, containments are a practical safety and cleanliness barrier. They:

  • Keep construction dust from turning a clean home dirty
  • Create a clear physical division in the house
  • Help keep pets and children out of an active work zone

For families living in the home during mitigation, that separation matters.

Our Rule: No Unescorted Entry

At New Life Restoration, we treat containments seriously. No one should enter a contained area unless accompanied and permitted by a restoration specialist. This protects everyone: the people working inside and the occupants outside.

How Negative Air Pressure Works

We place our containments under negative air pressure using professional air scrubbers. Negative air pressure means the pressure inside the containment is lower than the pressure outside it.

When that happens, air flows inward through any small gaps rather than outward. That matters because no barrier is perfectly airtight. With negative pressure, contaminated air, dust, or spores stay trapped inside the work area instead of escaping into the rest of the home.

Combined with proper filtration, negative air is one of the strongest controls we have for safety and containment integrity.

Not an Optional Extra

Containments are a core part of responsible mitigation. They give us control, protect the property, and protect the people who live there. We build them carefully, maintain them properly, and never treat them as an afterthought.
